My honey (and boozing partner) and I recently took me on a much needed vacation to Puerto Rico. More specifically, we spent 6 days (including travel) on the island of Vieques, a part of Puerto Rico which lies about 6 miles off the “big” island’s eastern shore. I suspected that some serious imbibing would take place. But, what do you do when your occupation (“booze research”) is also your vacation? Can you ever really leave the job? Would you want to?
The answer, of course is no, you never really leave your job if it is writing about booze. But, for this trip, I didn’t want to just indiscriminately intoxicate, like other vacays. I wanted a purpose. A focus. Yes, a quest. My computer’s dictionary tells me that a quest is “a long or arduous search for something.” That “something” of my quest was a rum punch.
Rum punch is a glorious concoction found around the Caribbean. Utterly simple in construction, yet infinitely complex in the number of recipes, rum punch is everything Thirsty Jane loves. It’s boozy, it’s an easy cocktail to make, and it’s tasty. Enough said.
Okay, the “quest” part of the journey was, frankly, just a way to legitimize inappropriate guzzling. But hopefully, my arduous journey will benefit you, my thirsty friends with a week’s worth of rum punch recipes easy enough to whip up on a week night and yummy enough to transport you from your day-to-day life to someplace a little sunnier and a lot more laid back (unless you are reading this from a Caribbean island in which case, just make the punch).
